New Website Have A Look

So basically when I was doing my HND we had a brief to create a website for ourselves, overall I wasn’t happy with this at all so I have taken it upon myself to create myself a more professional site, in which possible clients etc. can contact me on and look into myself abit more.

I will be updating this site all the time and it isn’t 100% yet, I have a lot more planned.

So if you get a chance have a look on: http://alexrichardson93.wix.com/alexrichardsondesign

Any questions or know how contact me on either the new site or via here!

Rhino Sketches

As I have sketching most of today because I’ve actually got a whole day off work for once so I thought this would be a good idea.

I began by quickly sketching using 1 image that I already had and I just used pencils, pens and markers.

None of them are any good but at least there giving me practice which is what I need at this point in time.

I am pretty happy with this 2 minute sketch it came out looking not to bad, I used a pencil to create the rhinos bodies contours.

I gave up on this one.

‘Welcome to the new Si Scott Studio site, we are a creative Design & Illustration studio that prides itself on finely crafted work with an obsessive attention to detail in everything we do.’

Quote from “Si Scott Studios” which I came across while looking for different illustration styles to try and find what I had in my head and these guys have beaten me to it haha, but they are a fantastic studio and the quality of there design work is mind blowing.

Link to there site: http://siscottstudio.com

Below are some screenshots from Si Scott Studios website and these are from several animal projects but my mind has been blown! these design/ illustrations have really opened my eyes and something has finally brought back my passion for design and this just shows me that I really do like Illustration and this is what I want to do, I would love to work or even do work experience at a studio like this, thee just fantastic, but now my job is to see if i Still have it in me to sketch and illustrate like I used to 4 years ago during my art A levels.

After looking at these I really just want to get sketching and have my final piece done already I can’t wait to see  how the final outcome will look, I sort of have a vision in my head but its blurry at the moment.

Looking at the type

So after creating my sign’s I really wanted to focus on the type, it just wasn’t right for me so I went back tot he start by looking at my logo design again.

I wanted something that was lighter, more elegant rather than the bold Impact typeface that I had used in my first logo design and after a little pay around I came up with a new more suitable logo design I feel, I found the typeface on Dafonts and by browsing their menus till I found the perfect typeface, so I stuck with it.

Basically I was just having a little play around with the intention of creating a new logo I basically knew what I wanted already but this was just looking at other options as well as the final outcome.

I decided to stick with the same red colour scheme but to give the flat logo some edge?, so 3D effect almost I added another layer with the same logo on it and I put it out of alinement to allow them both to be seen creating a shadow almost, I prefer it like this.

Screen shot 2014-03-06 at 13.06.10

This was the first sign that I put the new logo onto and it does look a lot better having the logo on the bottom but what I was thinking is instead of having the little image in the gap between the song lyrics and the logo I could move the logo up and have possibly a little quote? maybe something that I have written? maybe something along the lines of “We are British, be proud of those’s who embraced this”? I think that a quote will look better and mean something to the sign’s from me?

I happy putting that on there because there my signs and thats what I feel, I could also maybe use a quote from a famous Britain? but its very hard to find a decent one that I could use.

The sign In all red does look good, I will do a test print and see how it looks for the final outcome, but this is a strong possibility at the moment.

I have also had a look for the correct british motorway sign typeface and found the closest and used it on my sign.

I’m alot more happy with these signs now than before, They look so much better and they function better I think and my own little quote really adds to the designs I feel, it brings a little bit of me into the design.

Design Factory Project

After finishing the branding project I’m back on this one again, I have a month to complete it, this project is slightly different in the fact that for submission to the Design Factory I don’t need to submit my actual work, I need to create 4 PDF which my work will be included on, 1 for my research into the Paul Smith Exhibition, 2 for research and the last for my work.

I already know what I want to do because I have been thinking about this for over a month now and I have a very good insight into this, a couple of years ago I remember while studying art I came across a street artist from New York called Jay Shells, He did this really interesting project called “Rap Quotes” and basically he took lyrics from local raps artists that featured a street or place in New York on their songs and he made these into signs and placed them up around the city where they mention.

A few examples of he’s pieces of work, they are very simple and the concept is as well but these have really got me interested in this project, because the brief is so open I can pretty much do something that I want to for this project, so I want to utilise what I have learnt from years of doing art and looking at street art and use this in my own graphic design work.

Obviously I’m not just going to copy the designs, I will start from scratch finding songs and coming up with my own sign format and styles, but the sig style that he has used Is a generic one anyway that’s used all around the world so It is a possibility.

I need to get on with finding out about so possible songs, I hoping to create at least 4 or 5 signs sith a concept for many more in a visual aid which can be put in my PDF at the end like the image above.

There is a local artist how actual lives near me in Tonbridge called “Lee Willz” might be a thought to contact him and find out if it’s possible to do this for him? This project is about Britain and where the idea’s and project’s from I guess so this could be a thought to have my signs up and around town, using the idea of Jay Shells this will hopefully educate some people that we as a town aren’t that boring haha.

My other road to go down is to create signs for British Music like Queen, the Beatles, Ellie Goulding, Tinie Tempah, Calvin Harris, etc…

I really need to get on with the creation of these street signs but first I need to create a small proposal to showcase my idea to the teachers and other students.

Final Versions

Just some screenshots of my work how it looks at the moment.

One last thing that I had to go around and change was a slight type error, I forgot to put the full stop after the K in J.K., but I have now gone around and changed it everywhere.

Unusual Words

The whole design for these posters revolves around unusual words so my task is to have a look around in books and the internet to find words that are nearly unheard of and ones that I can actually design and illustrate for.

My first thought was to look at some phobias and fears rather than just blindingly browsing trying to find some.

Portfolio Page

After first creating the Home page design I went onto creating the Portfolio page, I began by having a think about the layout and I went back to the sketch book to decide how it could look and function, I decided to make the page long so the work could be seen at size just by scrolling up and down. Doing it this way I think makes the websites function better rather than over complicating it all with stupid animations and unnecessary gimmicks.

Picture 7

I first went about by deciding how long the portfolio page should be, I decided that It might be better having more pages rather than one massive one, although this is sort of what I want.

Picture 8

Originally I wanted to have several long pages which featured all of my portfolio, but after thinking about how the pages would look and function I decided against this – instead I am going to have individual pages for each different piece of design work, with a list of links on the side for each design.

Picture 9

So this is my type tours page for the portfolio part of the website, I will need to do this for each design – some pages will need to be longer to fit the design pieces on – below is a screenshot of a possible way of doing the pages, I have put a very light grey colour as the back drop but I decided against this because when my designs were viewed in an online browser they didn’t look right because of the white negative space around them.

Picture 10

Above is a rough, not 100% completed final design, I still need to figure some bits out but overall I am a lot happier with it like this rather than having the portfolio on really long pages.

I next have to

Home Page Design

After having a play around I decided that I seriously needed to get my website done, so I went back to the sketch book to come up with different idea’s which I will put in another post after this one.Picture 1This quick screenshot shows my Home Page design with my grid system on – the design has changed a lot from what I was orignally going to do, I decided to keep the title section very simple so allow the portfolio itself and image to do the talking.

Picture 2My new sketches and thought process gave me some nice additions to the Home page, I decided to keep the typeface the same at the top of the site because it’s very bold and strong, the body text is Myriad Pro size 15pt, for me the site still looks a bit bland but I want the site to be more functional rather than it being really flashy and stupid.

Picture 6 Picture 5 Picture 4 Picture 3

After getting the basic site done I decided to have a look at experimenting with the top title section of the site, I began to have a look at using some previous image that I collected for my experiments with my logo, some of them look okay but i still don’t know if I would use them yet.
