New Website Have A Look

So basically when I was doing my HND we had a brief to create a website for ourselves, overall I wasn’t happy with this at all so I have taken it upon myself to create myself a more professional site, in which possible clients etc. can contact me on and look into myself abit more.

I will be updating this site all the time and it isn’t 100% yet, I have a lot more planned.

So if you get a chance have a look on: http://alexrichardson93.wix.com/alexrichardsondesign

Any questions or know how contact me on either the new site or via here!

Thanks

Spine and Back

Looking at several different classic Penguin Books the spines are always the same and their design really well, so with this in mind I’m not going to change it, I want to use the same layout as the standard ones, using the information that I have Been given.

Spines500

I have all of the require information that is need on the spine, the text done, the logo already in a file ready to be used, done.

Yet to be decided is the colour of the outer section?, I want to keep in the theme of Classic Penguin Books and the theme of the book so the colour will need to be a popular colour in the age of these myths so probably a gold, red, purple, blue or green, so many options for me to choose from, this will be an aspect that will be decided during the design phase on the computer, this will be posted on the day with my decision.

The back of the book will feature the same colours as the front cover and will feature the same genre information in the middle section, this is also were the blur will be in a smaller sized type of the front cover.

Last mintue Idea for the back but either side of the bottom penguin logo it might be quite nice to add the start date of Penguin books? just a though

“Hip Hop” Subculture.

“Hip Hop” as a subculture originated from an African-American community during the 1970s in Bronx, New York, this has influence into Latin American communities. Hip Hop os often only though of as hip hop music, but in a wider sense of the term hip hop is much more than that and it can be a life style and four main elements of hip hop is rapping, DJing, breaking and graffiti.

Since its emergence in the South Bronx, hip hop culture has spread to both urban and suburban communities throughout the world. Hip Hop is a world known thing and the music side of it was one of the first elements which make hip hop up today and hip hop music is in basics terms a beat created by a DJ or a beatboxer accompanied by “Rapping” which is a style of rhythmic style of chanting or poetry.

Hip hop is simultaneously a new and old phenomenon; the importance of sampling to the art form means that much of the culture has revolved around the idea of updating classic recordings, attitudes, and experiences for modern audiences – called “flipping” within the culture. It follows in the footsteps of earlier American musical genres blues, jazz, and rock and roll in having become one of the most practiced genres of music in existence worldwide, and also takes additional inspiration regularly from soul music, funk, and rhythm and blues.

At its best, hip hop has given a voice to the voiceless and poverty-stricken worldwide, particularly in inner cities and neighborhoods suffering from urban blight, and showcased their artistic ingenuity and talent on a global scale. At its worst, hip hop has mirrored the worst aspects of the mainstream culture that it once challenged: materialism, sexism, an internalized racism and an antipathy towards intellectualism.

This subculture, nicknamed hip hop, is about assertiveness, display, pride, status and competition, particularly among males. Clothes are not only a part of this offhand cultural statement; they are a kind of uniform for cultural challenge. As with any subculture there are always negatives that go along with them and hip hop has been linked and related to most of the worst like murder, hate crime and gangs.

Sketches

As I wrote earlier in the week I was finding it hard to come up with new and exciting idea’s for my “Typographic Poster” project, well today my teacher helped the group to think outside the box and not to censor rubbish or unusual idea’s because they could become or have elements that can be used in my final piece.

The way she got us to do this was to make us open our minds up to every idea, she got us to write down every use that we could possibly think of for a “Brick”, now I know it doesn’t sound like much but I found that this task really helped me, anything that a brick could be used for write it down, e.g. build a wall, a brick sandwich, door stop, a paper weight or even a brick dog, all idea’s no matter what is an idea’s so use it.

After this task I was just getting new idea’s for my poster, new designs were just coming from the most unusual places like the class room door, lights, boxes anything that I could translate into a design I did and it worked, I’m not going to use all of these designs but have more is better than have none or a few.

I know that these designs and sketches aren’t great but they were just quick for me to get my idea’s down.

Kern Me

One of my teachers at college show the whole group a “game” type application on the internet that can help people learn about one of the key essential elements in most design, Typography.

The whole idea of this game is to move each letter to its correct position, you have to position them with the correct letter spacing and depending on how close you are to each letters correct positioning you get a score out of 100, there are 10 levels with random difficulties and after all 10 you get an average score made up of your individual scores.

This game is really good for challenging yourself and your friends to see who has the better perception of were things go.

This is a quick like to the application: http://type.method.ac/

This is what you start with, the letter are in the wrong places need to be corrected.

You simply just click on each letter and move it to were you think.

After you have submitted your final positions you get a score out of 100 and it shows you were each letter is meant to go.
