New Website Have A Look

So basically when I was doing my HND we had a brief to create a website for ourselves, overall I wasn’t happy with this at all so I have taken it upon myself to create myself a more professional site, in which possible clients etc. can contact me on and look into myself abit more.

I will be updating this site all the time and it isn’t 100% yet, I have a lot more planned.

So if you get a chance have a look on: http://alexrichardson93.wix.com/alexrichardsondesign

Any questions or know how contact me on either the new site or via here!

Final review and changes after feedback.

After receiving all my feedback and translating it to myself to find the needs of the target audience and suggestions from others there were some changes that need to happen with the overall layout and composition of the pieces, Firstly I went back into the research phase, only a very small amount was needed but it was very relevant to the project to get to the next level.

I had to change some pieces around like the box layout and the typeface, which was prompted by the feedback that I have received, the type wasn’t very visible so I changed this by first choosing a more suitable typeface and a more suitable colour, but still staying in tune with the design style and colour scheme, the other was that the message of the design’s weren’t very clear and my research showed me how I could achieve this, these small and simple changes developed the designs into better and more audience friendly pieces.

Online Feedback Review

My other method of retrieving non-bais feedback was by using online graphic forums, I went about asking other members on the website for advice and honest feedback for my design’s, I did this in plenty of time for the deadline dates but I received no messages back and no advice, so this forum of feedback was at a dead end but it was worth doing and it’s something that I would consider using again because if I do get feedback from other designs it will be critical and honest.

Last Minute Updates to the Design’s.

Picture 8

After having the pieces done for a couple of days I started to get annoyed with the way they looked, So I decided to have a look back at some previous WWF posters/advertisements to inspirations and here’s what I came up with, the others all featured the logo in a little box and the type that I have created wasn’t working for me so I changed it.

The designs really needed the something at the bottom of the pieces, they looked really bland and empty so I changed this.

These posters seem to use block capital type and this works well because it makes the quotes/ what there saying more firm and bold, so this is what I have changed my typeface for my WWF pieces too, I previously used American Captain which is one of my favorite typefaces but I do seem to use it quiet a bit so a change is nice and for this project it didn’t suit it properly.

Comparing my work to my Brief.

Seeing that my work is based around a pretty specific brief that I have wrote and for feedback  for myself  I will now compare my work to the brief, making sure that the work is to the standards and restrictions of the brief, so here’s the brief again:

K college  HND 2 Graphic Design

Module: Illustration & typography

Date set: 10 March Date due: 19 May

The Brief

In this brief for your final major project you will be focusing on the company WWF, a highly reconcilable charitable company that is a preventative organization for the protection of endangered animals and environmentally issues.

You have been set the task to create between 2 and 5 design pieces using illustration as the main form of visual communication; the designs can be no bigger than A1 but can be any format. The pieces must feature the same style through-out as part of a set, this can be 100% your own choice how you go about this, the illustrations can be computer designed or psychical illustration’s dependent on your chosen style.

The theme of your design work can be anything that WWF deals with, animal endangerment, environmental issues and sponsorship; the pieces are being design to be sold at charity to raise funds for WWF for your chosen issue/ message. The design must feature the WWF logo somewhere, in some form; this is the only feature that must be used.

Think very carefully about the message you are trying to portray in your design work, current and previous WWF advertising have a powerful message for each advert, this is something that you will need to think about for your own designs, this  message/theme will determine the whole design of the  pieces. This message can be subtle or bold, this is your choice on how you go about this, research will be key to successful pieces, but remember they are for sale so the visuals in your illustrations must be appealing to your target audience.

Research Materials

The designs should not only feature WWF style but your own, this is also a way of getting exposure in the design world as well as helping a worthwhile cause, these design’s should take inspiration from WWF advertising but at the same time be fundamentally different. Using what you have learnt throughout your design course in ideology and methodology.

Your research should be reflected in your final designs, this can be produced in a sketch book or a blog, in addition to your research other research methods could be used as well in your design work like mind maps, mood boards, etc., it is good design practice to consider all types or research and ways of researching, inspiration can come from anywhere.

Learning outcomes:

  • To greater your own knowledge about the design world and there practices.
  • To develop an illustrative style.
  • To push yourself with issue’s and important decisions in your work.
  • Finally to show that you can design and create.

So the main points and restrictions from the brief are as followed:

  • The designs have to focus around the company WWF.
  • Create between 2 – 5 pieces using illustration as the main form of visual communication.
  • Either hand done or computer aided design.
  • No bigger than A1.
  • Underlying message

I would like to say that my pieces following all of the brief, I have created 2 pieces that have been focused around the company WWF, they have both been done using computer aided programs and the main form of visual communication is illustration. The pieces aren’t bigger than A1 and the underlying message which is very subtle but it’s showing the beauty of all animals, so the pieces are a creative stand against animal endangerment.

So I have always wanted to use an online Graphic design forum and using it for feedback is perfect, especially this project. Feedback was something that I was and have been struggling to find time to get done, but an online forum can save me a lot of time and get critical and honest advise and  feedback from other designs, all I will have to do is upload my design work and explain briefly my thought process and ask for feedback, simple.

With this project I knew what I wanted to do but achieving this was a lot harder than I first had suspected, I was very set though on what I had to do and how I was going to do it, I did a large amount of research into all the possible outcomes and processes that could help me achieve my project goals according to the brief. My time keeping for this project was very good to start with but as the project got to the middle it being to get poor, this isn’t because I wasn’t determined but this is because of outside problems at home and with other aspects in my life but as I have to I cracked on and got everything done in the end, being 100% honest I could have done more and probably achieved a more fulfilling outcome but I couldn’t.

As with most of my projects my favorite moment and time in the project was when I finished everything, especially when I got my final pieces done, I could see what all of my work and time has achieved, This is something that makes being a creative person doing creative things worth it, the final outcome. I really didn’t like much else for this project, I wasn’t in the right frame of mind because of personal issues, these really effected the whole project I think and I couldn’t help what has happened but the thing that counts to me is that even though I am having a very hard time, things got done and for that I am proud of myself on this last project…

Final Pieces

So its that time again in my project where I have actually managed to complete my final pieces and I am so happy with them, they are designs that I would like to keep and would be proud of, I had a lot of issues with the sketching in this project but I wanted to push myself with my own style and design process.

My review of Feedback using one of my chosen methods.

James Mathews: Really like the illustrations but they could have a little more detail in certain places like the butterfly illustration, black background look good but the design could use some colour somewhere?

Leyla Dawn: Like the butterfly one a lot, but there a little dark, but nice, can I have the butterfly one?

Graham Pine: The designs are very interesting, the effect on the wood is something different, makes the illustrations stand out more, the logo and the type could be a little darker can be hard to read.

With this method of feedback maybe would think that these opinions are false but it does work, because I have based these made up people on real people that I know I would like to think I know what they would say, I showed them my written reviews on behalf of them and everyone was spot on as well so creating this feedback was correct and a method that I will use again and again because it can work if done right.

More Information

Well I am currently writing up my essay to go along with the FMP, this essay is on my methodology and I am finding it hard but anyway to the point of this post I have mentioned in my essay that I was influenced by certain adverts and pieces in an edition of ‘communication Arts’ a May 2011 issue to be precise.

I need to collect some images from this magazine because I have referenced them in my essay and visuals will help explain my thought and work process.

So one of the ways of feedback that I have decided to use is something called  , this is basically where I myself create 3 or more fictional characters, these can be based on real like people that I may know, but the whole idea is I make these people up and I can go into as much detail with each as I want but long story short I have to do feedback on my work thinking in these people’s mind sets.

Person 1:

Name: James Mathews

Age: 20

Gender: Male

Health: Non smoker, active

Relationship Status: Single

Interests: Music, cars and Drinking

Social: Yes to a degree, but shy at times

Person 2:

Name: Leyla Dawn

Age: 28

Gender: Female

Health: Smoker but active

Relationship Status: In a relationship for 3 years

Interests: Going out, shopping, drinking , patrying

Social: Very social

Person 3:

Name: Graham Pine

Age: 55

Gender: Male

Health: Non-smoker but heavy drinker

Relationship Status: Married 23 years

Interests: Going down the pub, family events, any time out, walks, etc

Social: Talks to everyone, goes to the pub often.

So with this basic information I can sort of get a feel for each person and I have based them on people I know so I have better insight into them so I think I could judge the way they would look at my work without actually asking them.

I will continue this post when the pieces are mounted and complete.
